Mini-Mediaevals

To help the little ones immerse themselves in the history surrounding the Fort and the important part the San Luis wall played during the Spanish Liberal period, we encourage them to enjoy the dances and traditions of the time. First, the instructor explains to the children the importance of San Luis Fort during the Napoleonic era, and also takes them through other events such as the public festivities held to mark the accession of Charles IV to the throne. Once the children have had an initial introduction to the area’s history, they will then dress up in mediaeval costumes and, through dance, make their experience of the castle’s public festivities even more realistic. The children can enjoy different dances from the period, under the instructor’s tutelage.

Malaka Folk

The aim of this activity is to bring children closer to Mediterranean culture by having them create their own personalised accessories, for use in traditional local dances. Castanets and hats are accessories typical of Verdiales, a traditional Malagan dance. For this activity, the instructor helps each child make their own castanet or hat. To make the castanets, they cut out two circles from a piece of cardboard, leaving a distance of 1-2 cm between them in order fold them. After cutting them out, they glue a couple of bottle caps to the centre of both using silicone, and then start decorating them with different coloured ribbons. Similarly, the traditional hat (made from EVA foam) is decorated with coloured ribbons, adding flowers on top.

Olé!

This activity introduces the children to Mediterranean culture through dance and music, allowing them to learn the basics of Flamenco and Verdiales, a traditional dance from the Malaga area. In this way, the children will be able to express themselves through music, while also discovering the local culture. The activity involves the instructor teaching the children basic steps of the traditional local dances, as well as how to use the accessories that the children will make themselves.

The Great Defence

Fort San Luis played an important role in the Spanish defence against the Napoleonic army. In this activity, children will be encouraged to recreate the Napoleonic invasion of the city and the fort’s resistance. It involves the instructor dividing the children into two groups: one will be the French and the other the Spanish. Both teams will have to build walls to protect themselves from the opposing team’s attack, while the instructor explains the true history of the wall of San Luis. The teams will use small plastic balls to try to knock down the opposing wall, and win the battle. The team must try to protect their wall while also trying to keep their part of the battlefield free from balls. The winning team is the one whose wall sustains the least damage and has the fewest balls in its part of the field.

Imagine being a potter

Taking into account the archaeological sites found in the Marbella area, where remains of pottery-making facilities have been discovered, and the importance of this deeply rooted, long-standing traditional Mediterranean craft, the aim is for the children to develop their creativity and skills. The instructor will demonstrate how to make small clay pot, so that the children can learn how the potter’s wheel works. She then gives each child a pot. The children will decorate, draw on and paint these pots as they see fit.

Musical Twister

In this fun activity, the children are introduced to traditional Malagan dance in a game. The basic steps of the Verdiales are laid out on the floor using footprint-shaped stickers. The children have to follow the footprints like in a game of Twister. They play in pairs, with each child at one end of the pathway, and the instructor telling them where to place their feet (the footprints will be colour-coded so the children can follow along); in this way, the instructor will take them through the Verdiales steps, and the children will end up dancing as they play.

Do you recycle?

How much do you know about looking after the environment and recycling? The children will compete to become the king of recycling through a Kahoot shown on a screen in the Mini-Club, to test just how much they know about recycling and the environment. To do this, each child is given 4 paddles with the geometric shapes corresponding to the Kahoot answers. The children will earn points as they answer the questions correctly. In the end, each child will win a prize for taking part, with the winner earning a recycled special prize.

Taking care of our planet

This activity takes the form of a tour through the hotel, enabling the children to understand the importance of respecting the environment and our commitment to this through a range of environmental measures. This involves showing children how the different departments work and the measures taken by the hotel to ensure it plays an active role in looking after the environment.

Plant your plant

We’ll run this activity on the same day as the crazy cakes, with the children made aware that the shells from the eggs used for the cake mixture are the ones we’ll use for this activity. The shells must be cleaned with care, for use as their plant pot. The children decorate it with different faces and colours, and then personalise it with their name. The instructor will hand out an egg to each child, which they must decorate and personalise. Next, they put a little soil into the egg, and then make a small groove to place the seed in, before finally covering it with a little more soil. Finally, they water it and then it’s a question of waiting for their little plant to grow! In this activity, children have fun while discovering how plants grow, what they need, and the important role they play in the environment.

Look after your allotment

Before carrying out this activity, the children will be asked to eat some fruit and bring the peel to the Mini-Club, so they can understand how the composter works and feel even closer to the world of gardening. In addition, this activity will involve the children tending the Mini-Club’s own allotment, learning things such as transplanting, etc. This brings them closer to the foods that are part of the Mediterranean diet, and teaches them to look after themselves to ensure that they grow properly.
